Kangaroo Conservation Center
on the Today Show

Watch the Today Show on NBC, Thursday July 10 2008

Viewers from across the country will get an up-close look at the inner workings of the Kangaroo Conservation Center on the morning of Thursday, July 10 when the KCC is scheduled to be featured on NBC-TV’s “Today” show.

Founders/directors Roger and Debbie Nelson, along with a few selected young marsupials, will make the trip to New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza, where they will appear live on the “Today” set with hosts Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Al Roker.

“Today” producer Molly Parnell and a Georgia-based video crew spent the entire day on June 18 filming the KCC’s employees working with the nine species of kangaroos in the 87-acre park located one hour north of Atlanta at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Dawsonville. The “Today” cameras also captured the public tour given at the KCC.

“We are extremely pleased to further our mission of preserving these wonderful creatures to a nationwide audience on the ‘Today’ show,” said Roger Nelson. “Not only is the Kangaroo Conservation Center part of a captive breeding program for zoos across the country, it is also a tourist destination in Northeast Georgia that educates the general public that visit us each year about kangaroos.”

The Kangaroo Conservation Center — selected as “Best Animal Encounter” in Atlanta magazine’s Best of Atlanta 2006, profiled by The New York Times, Smithsonian & Delta Sky magazines and rated “Fodor’s Choice” by Fodor’s The Carolinas and Georgia, 17th Edition in 2007 — features the largest kangaroo collection outside of Australia.

Down Under Ball 2007
Thank you for making the 2007 Ball an outstanding success!

Through your generous participation in the Down Under Ball this year, ANZACC has been able to donate $44,000 to our charity partner - US Fund for UNICEF - and the Down Under Ball was a direct catalyst in further contributions to UNICEF of $25,000.

This brings the 2007 total to $69,000, and brings our total funds raised for UNICEF in the last four years to just over $161,000.

This has only been possible through your generous efforts - thank you!

Southeast Regional Director for US Fund for UNICEF - Barron Segar - attended a function where the ANZACC Board paid tribute to the incredible efforts of our Down Under Ball Committee.

Barron noted that the funds raised this year alone could:
  • purchase vaccines to immunize 345,000 children against measles
  • provide 31,363 children with schooling during an emergency through School-in-a-Box kits
  • provide clothing, bedding, and blankets to 1,104 children who have been separated from their families

One of the fundraising highlights this year was the UNICEF School-in-a-Box. You directly contributed 72 School in a Box kits to UNICEF - thank you!

School-in-a-Box is a ready-made educational solution packed in a lockable metal box, containing equipment such as pencils, exercise books, scissors, and carrier bags sufficient for pupils, and equipment for a teacher.

These units are a great way to support UNICEF - read more about School-in-a-Box, and how you can help.
